In the early 1990s, Anthony Mazlish was suffering from back pain and looking for a solution in the DC Metro area. After driving from store to store, he became frustrated by the lack of options available to him. In the midst of this frustration and pain, Mr. Mazlish realized the world needed a store that specialized in a variety of ergonomically designed products. This store would help customers relieve back and neck pain; thereby improving daily comfort. The store he envisioned was Healthy Back.
In March of 1994, Mr. Mazlish went from investor to entrepreneur as the first Healthy Back store-specializing in ergonomically correct products-opened in Rockville, Maryland. Within its first year, the store exceeded all expectations. Soon, Healthy Back was launched on a path toward achieving its goal of becoming a specialty retailer and e-tailer that would make it possible for every customer to Feel Better Than Ever Before.
Encouraged by the tremendous response to the first store, the company opened additional stores in the Washington, DC-Metro Area while developing plans for further expansion. In October of 1996, the prototype store for national expansion opened in Raleigh, NC. Favorable sales allowed the growth to continue in January 1998 with the acquisition of a back retailer based in San Diego, CA. Then in March of 1999, Healthy Back acquired another chain of back stores based in Denver, CO.
Healthy Back has a national presence in six different markets around the country and services all parts of the nation through HealthyBack.com. In early 2008, with its expansion and web ventures a success, an opportunity was presented to acquire the assets of JoAnne's Bed & Back (a local competitor) to strengthen and solidify the company's presence and dominance at home in the DC-Metro Area. Today the company boasts 25 stores, a vibrant shopping outlet at HealthyBack.com, as well as a catalog for customer convenience.
