Meet the newest member of your team. The Amia Chair from Steelcase. Amia is a hardworking task chair designed to handle long hours of serious sitting, which is handy during those all-nighters. Beneath the Amia chair’s upholstery, inside its sleek backrest, there’s a form of our unique comfort system called LiveLumbar technology; a system of flexors that contour to fit your spine for continuous lower back support. You may not see it, but you’ll certainly feel it. The seat also contours to you, while a flexible seat edge relieves pressure on your legs. As you sit in the chair, an adjustable LiveLumbar zone flexes with your every move, for consistent ergonomic support for your lower back. Hour after hour, day after day. With additional comfort features like 4-way adjustable arms, adjustable seat depth and a flexible front seat edge, Amia keeps you feeling good 24/7 and love how you work.
The Amia earned Gold Crade to Cradle Certification and is up to 97% recyclable.
Also awarded Gold Best of NeoCon 2007 in the ergonomic seating category.
LiveLumbar Height
The Amia chair’s little secret. A system of flexors tucked neatly away inside its back rest that contour to fit your spine, for continuous lower back support as you move in your chair.
Flexible Seat Edge
When you recline or lean forward, the seat edge flexes to relieve pressure on the back of the legs.
Adjustable Seat Depth
People don’t fit neatly into average body sizes. Leg and torso lengths can vary independent of a person’s overall height. Adjustable seat depth accommodates different body shapes for long-term comfort.
Back Tension
Adjust the amount of resistance, or “push back” to your preference to help maintain your back’s natural curve.
Height, Depth, Width, and Pivot Arms
Arms telescope in and out, move forward and back, pivot and adjust up and down so you can find a natural position that comfortably supports the wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck.
Durability
The Amia chair is durable enough to handle loads up to 300 lbs. and is backed by the Steelcase North America Lifetime Warranty.
Their design process starts with the desire to do what’s right, combined with tools that help Steelcase identify ways they can continuously improve their environmental performance.
Using a hollistic approach, a Lifecycle Assessment measures the impact of each step in a product’s lifecycle: materials, productions, transport, use, and end of life. For example, all materials in the Amia chair were required to pass materials chemistry analysis by MBDC, which tests each substance for safety to human and environmental health. The chair is up to 97% recyclable, and the use of inseparable mixed materials was avoided to make recycling easier.
The Amia chair was designed by the Steelcase Design Studio in collaboration with industrial designer, Thomas Overthun of IDEO. A very similar collaboration between Steelcase and IDEO resulted in the best selling Leap chair in 1999 and the Leap WorkLounge in 2001. The Amia chair’s shared origin with these products includes the ergonomic principles of Alive Seating technology, which first appeared in the Leap chair, Alive Seating technology supports natural movement of the body, and led to the Amia chair’s LiveLumbar feature.
From the start, the team wanted to give customers a different option than the expressly technical ergonomic chairs on the market. The search for a simple and friendly image for Amia became the driving idea for the design. According to Thomas Overthun, “innovations such as the LiveLumbar mechanism have been incorporated into the overall shape rather than made explicit on the chair’s outside. Technology quietly serving, rather than drawing attention to itself, seemed appealing in the context of today’s information overload. This combined with an attention to detail and materials allowed Steelcase to realize Amia’s calm and redefined design.
Amia earned Gold Cradle to Cradle Product Certification from MBDC. The chair also has Indoor Advantage Gold certification for protection indoor air quality, so Amia may help contribute toward earning LEED credit for your project. That’s thumbs up and ‘Yeah!’ for human and environmental health all around.
